Cosmetic Dentistry: Am I a Candidate for Implant Supported Dentures

implant-supported dentures San Jose, CA

For patients who have lost most or all their teeth, implant-supported dentures can be an innovative solution. Cosmetic dentists usually recommend them over regular dentures because they have more stability, better functionality and improved appearance.

Who is eligible for implant-supported dentures?

Unlike regular dentures that rely on the gums for support, implant-supported dentures are held securely with dental implants placed carefully inside the jawbone. However, not everyone is a good candidate for dental implants.

To know if a patient is eligible for implant-supported dentures, the dentist will need to perform a comprehensive oral evaluation. During this, the dentist can do a visual assessment of the mouth, gum tissues and jawbone. They may also request for X-ray imaging, CT scans and medical history. The result of this evaluation will help the dentist decide if implant-supported dentures are right for the patient. There are several factors that determine a patient’s eligibility:

Bone density and gum health

Patients must have adequate jawbone density to hold the implants. Without proper bone support, the implant may not stand the test of time. Also, the dentist will ensure that the patient is in excellent oral health. This means the gums must be healthy and free of infection. Any oral disease present must be treated before going ahead with the procedure.

If the patient does not have adequate bone volume, the dentist may recommend a bone graft procedure. If bone graft surgery is not possible, then mini dental implants may be a more suitable option. Those metal posts are shorter than regular implants and therefore require less bone structure to stay intact.

General wellbeing

The patient must be healthy overall. Certain conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases may affect the bone’s ability to heal, which can adversely affect how the implant fuses with the jawbone (osseointegration). Smokers or heavy tobacco users are not eligible for implant-supported dentures.

Why should someone choose implant-supported dentures?

Implant-supported dentures are excellent choices for people who currently have dentures but want a more reliable option. Since they are connected directly to implants, the stability is better than regular dentures. Implants also help to prevent bone resorption. In summary, implant-supported dentures solve most of the problems common with people who have conventional dentures.

These dentures function and look like natural teeth. Therefore, patients can eat their favorite foods without worrying that the chewing force will cause their denture to shift out of place. The bite comes from the jawbone, not the gum tissues. Patients can speak more easily, smile confidently and go on with their daily routine with this dental restoration. Depending on the patient’s preference, implant-supported dentures are available as either a fixed or a removable prosthesis.

Final note

Implant-supported dentures are an effective tooth restoration for replacing lost teeth. If you are considering implant dentures to replace missing teeth or want to change your current dentures, talk to a dentist. They can perform the necessary examination to know if you are a candidate for the procedure.
