Four Tips to Prepare for a Gum Grafting Procedure

Gum Grafting San Jose, CA

A gum grafting procedure can seem intimidating, but you can minimize any anxiety you may experience by understanding what to expect and adequately preparing beforehand. This review discusses how you can properly prepare for a gum grafting procedure before the day of your scheduled visit.

How to prepare for a gum grafting procedure

Of course, your dentist should provide you with pre-procedure instructions to follow, and it is important to follow the specific advice of your dentist. However, the following are four common tips that dental professionals often give to their gum grafting patients before the day of the treatment.

Talk to your dentist about the type of gum grafting procedure

It is often helpful for patients to understand exactly what takes place during the procedure. It is also important to understand that there are different types of gum grafting treatments and determine which one they are receiving. The three types are:

  • Connective tissue grafts
  • Free gingival grafts
  • Pedicle grafts

Each has a specific purpose and may be recommended by dentists for specific reasons, so understanding the differences in purpose and the way they are performed is important.

Arrange for a ride home after the gum grafting procedure

A gum grafting procedure is a simple surgery with minimal risks, but anesthetics are used. Therefore, patients are required to arrange for assistance going home. The easiest way is to have a loved one take you home after the treatment. Be sure to let them know ahead of time to avoid any scheduling issues. It can also make things easier to arrange for a ride to the dentist or surgeon’s office as well.

Buy your food in advance for the recovery period

The mouth should be sore for a week or two after the gum grafting procedure. One way to minimize discomfort and inflammation is to stick to a soft diet. This could include mashed potatoes, jello, scrambled eggs, yogurt, and any other soft foods you might enjoy. It is also helpful to stay away from extremely hot or cold foods as well to avoid irritation, although a bowl of soup or hot pasta could work if you allow it to cool first. Avoid beverages with sugar and drink primarily water during recovery. Be sure to shop in advance, as patients do not feel like shopping after the procedure.

Prepare for at least a few days off from work

Last but not least, arrange for a few days off from work (generally at least three days). It is hard to talk and function at a high level after a gum grafting procedure, so notifying your boss of the procedure and arranging for time off is important. You can also schedule the oral work at a time that is most convenient for you to miss at work as well.
