The surgeon will provide instructions for proper oral hygiene and aftercare during the recovery period. Pain medication and antibiotics may be prescribed and a patient will be encouraged to eat soft foods for the first few days.
After the placement of the screw and cylinder, the surgeon may request the patient to wait for some weeks before the next stage of the procedure. This will ensure that the bone grows around the dental implant, meaning that it will be permanently accepted by the body. The process will help create a solid base for the new tooth. During this period, the patient will eat, drink and speak normally.
After the process is done, the patient will return to the surgeon for the abutment to be placed onto the implant. The surgeon will first have to reopen the gum before attaching the abutment, which extends above the gum and holds the artificial tooth. After this step, a dental crown, bridge or denture will replace the missing tooth. Sometimes, the abutment will be attached to the implant post during the initial surgery. In such a case, there would be no need for the second procedure.
Regular and effective cleaning of an implant will prevent inflammation. A silica toothpaste will help to reduce bacteria. The abutment area should be kept clean, which will help to decrease inflammation and increase the chances of implant success. Professional cleaning is also important.
