When Is a Crown Dental Restoration Needed?

Dental Restorations San Jose, CA

At some point, many people will need dental restoration. Depending on your condition and needs, various treatments are available. Dental crowns are among the most common procedures that dentists handle. Your dentist can examine your teeth and determine whether a crown will correct your issue and give you the relief you need.

The process of getting a crown

In most cases, it will take two or three appointments for a person to get this type of dental restoration. The dentist will first explain the procedure and prepare the patient by talking about the benefits and possible side effects. The dentist will then take X-rays and make impressions of the patient’s mouth. This information goes to a lab where a technician makes the crown, usually out of ceramic, porcelain or metal.

Once the dental crown is ready, the patient comes back to the office. The dentist numbs the area in the mouth so the patient can feel comfortable. Next, the dentist shaves the tooth so the crown will fit. It is then cemented in place. The dentist checks the patient’s bite and makes any necessary adjustments.

To keep a tooth from breaking

A lack (or absence) of brushing and flossing can lead to severe tooth decay. This could cause the tooth to rot and become weak. Eventually, the tooth could crack or fracture. A crown dental restoration will protect the tooth and maintain function and form. This enables the patient to continue eating normally.

For large cavities

For many cavities, the dentist can remove the decay and fill it with composite resin. A filling usually takes care of these issues. However, when the cavity is too large for the tooth to support a filling, a crown will be necessary.

Dental restoration for physical defects

A dental crown is also useful when a patient has a cracked, chipped or broken tooth. This restoration also works well if a tooth is worn down, misaligned or abnormally large or small. The crown covers the flaw and restores its appearance.

Use as a teeth-whitening alternative

Over time, poor oral hygiene or consumption of some types of food and beverage can discolor and stain teeth. That unsightly yellow or brown color can be embarrassing. Patients who do not want to do in-office or at-home teeth whitening can get a crown to cover their teeth. The dentist will fabricate a crown to closely match the natural color of a tooth.

Other uses

This dental restoration is also used for patients who get bridges or dental implants. With a bridge, the dentist will anchor artificial teeth to crowns covering the natural teeth. The crown also goes on top of a titanium implant to restore the patient’s ability to bite.

Look and feel well once more

Tooth damage can make it difficult to eat and speak. You may not even want to go out in public or show your smile. A crown dental restoration can repair these issues. Visit a dentist near you today and enjoy these important activities again.
